Tancredo and Lamm Call for Halt to Massive Immigration in America

"I don't think anyone in Colorado has been shielded from the negative effects growth has had on our local communities."

August 8, 2001

DENVER, CO--U.S. Representative Tom Tancredo (R-CO) was joined today at the state capitol by former Colorado Governor Richard Lamm (D) as they highlighted how massive legal and illegal immigration have negatively affected the quality of life in our communities and contributed to the uncontrolled growth and urban sprawl in Colorado.

"I don't think anyone in Colorado has been shielded from the negative effects growth has had on our local communities," Tancredo said. "This is due in large part to the massive legal and illegal immigration that is exploding within, or should I say through our borders."

"We must stop this unfettered flow into our country, or we will see irreversible damage done to our economic and social resources," Tancredo continued.

"As rain is to a river, and as a river is to a flood, so also is immigration to the question of growth in America," Lamm said.

"U.S. population is projected to double within the lifetimes of children born today, but this doubling can easily be avoided by Congress returning immigration to traditional replacement levels," added Fred Elbel, a member of the Sierrans for U.S. Population Stabilization (SUSPS), who was in attendance.

During the press conference, Tancredo referred to population estimates and charts that highlight Colorado's rapid population growth from 1990-2000, with 1 million new inhabitants in the state--double than the figure from 1980-1990.

Tancredo was also quick to point out that although the sheer number of immigrants is less in Colorado than in many other western states, Colorado has become home to many Americans escaping the megalopolises that are forming as a result of massive immigration. Between 1980 and 2000, approximately 400,000 Americans moved to Colorado via interstate migration.

Last week Tancredo introduced H.R. 2712, the Mass Immigration Reduction Act of 2001, which would impose a five year moratorium on immigration. When the provisions of the bill are implemented, total immigration into the country will drop from 1 million immigrants to approximately 300,000.

"To ignore this problem any longer will mean the deterioration of the way of life we expect and have grown to love in Colorado," Tancredo said.
