Gaylord Nelson,
CCN Board Member, Remembered (cont)

In 1970 Senator Nelson founded Earth Day, which established the beginning of the modern environmental movement in the United States. The trend-setting environmentalist never wavered in his concern for the growing U.S. population's impact on the environment, and his speeches across the country focused on the threat of U.S. population growth to environmental sustainability. In 1995, he was recognized for his efforts to protect the environment with a Presidential Medal of Freedom presented by then-President Clinton.

Senator Nelson was an active member of Carrying Capacity Network's Board of Advisors, supporting CCN's positions that dramatic immigration reduction is necessary to achieve U.S. population stabilization to protect the environment. He was not terribly sympathetic to either growth management or to immigration management. He realized that mass immigration reduction was essential, and he said so at more than one of CCN's conferences at which he was a keynote speaker.

In the 1990's, Senator Nelson was working closely with Carrying Capacity Network to try to get his former Senate colleagues to hold hearings on U.S. sustainability. He had convinced several senators to hold hearings on this topic, but some key members were defeated in the next election. Undaunted, he continued speaking and writing about these issues.

Indeed, he was always attempting to learn more about carrying capacity issues. He noted to a fellow Board member once that he carried audiotapes of other speakers at CCN conferences in his car so that he could listen to them as he drove to work.

The loss of Gaylord Nelson will be deeply felt by the Board and staff of Carrying Capacity Network. We solemnly take this moment to say farewell to a dedicated and courageous American.
